Backpack Hiking Harness
Suggestion for Backpacking Trails to Notable Places in the Western US?
A group of friends and I were planning to hike Mt. Whitney this summer, but just recieved notice that our lottery attempt failed.
To all the backpackers out there:
Could you recommend a hike that:
1. Goes to someplace of cultural or geographic significance.
2. In the western half of the lower 48.
3. Would only take 4 days 3 nights (or less) to accomplish
4. Requires no harnessed climbing.
I am thinking Hells Canyon in Idaho but was looking for some suggestions.

You can still go to Mt. Whitney. While all permits are available for reservation, in April, spaces that haven’t been filled are posted online and available by phone, fax and mail. And, up to two days before your planned day, you can attempt to pick up free permits that have been canceled or not confirmed from the office near Lone Pine. It’s no guarantee, but it’s Mt. Whitney.

If you can’t get up that way, you can try to get a permit for the trail up Cottonwood Pass/New Army Pass.
